SYNOPSIS
When the President is found dead in an apparent suicide pact with his golf cart, the "national grief" triggers a spike in suicide statistics. A new independent leader rises - Heather Hawke - who promises to address the number one issue facing the USA.
Haunted by the dark secrets of her teenage past, Veronika Salinger—a middle-aged suburban divorcee—reluctantly becomes a national mental health advocate after a tragic accident catapults her into the spotlight. As she’s appointed "suicide czar" by President Heather Hawke, an independent leader with plans to fix the nation's grief and trauma, Veronika’s fame grows, but her dangerous twin daughters uncover her past and manipulate her, forcing Veronika into a desperate fight to prevent history from repeating itself.
THEMES
Grief & Trauma
The film delves into the impacts of grief, trauma, and personal failure. Veronica, as a "suicide czar," becomes a symbol of both the country’s collective grief and her own unresolved trauma from her involvement in the original Heathers deaths.
Power & Manipulation
The political satire in the film shines a light on how people in power exploit societal crises for personal gain. The newly elected president uses the rising suicide rate as a platform to gain more power and further her own agenda.
The Cycle of Generational Dysfunction
The legacy of trauma is a key theme. Veronica’s struggle and emotional legacy of the original Heathers. The film explores how Veronica’s past actions and guilt have left scars that perpetuate destructive behaviour.
Political Corruption & Celebrity Culture
The president uses the suicide crisis as a springboard for greater power, while her government is filled with hypocrisy. Veronica’s influence is part of the larger political circus that embodies the commodification of tragedy for personal and political gain.
TONE & STYLE
Dark Comedy / Satire
The tone is unapologetically dark, with humour that mocks serious issues like trauma, grief, mental health, and political manipulation. Think of it as the perfect blend of absurd humour, sarcasm, and biting commentary.
Absurd & Surreal
The plot and characters are exaggerated, creating an almost surreal atmosphere. Everything feels extreme but is laced with undeniable truth about modern society
Hyper-Reality
The rules of reality are bent for comedic or satirical purposes. Characters' behaviour will feel larger than life, underscoring the farcical nature of the situation they are in.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Fans of the original
The movie’s dark humour, satire, and exploration of high school culture make it a cult classic among fans of the 1988 film, who are now in their 30s, 40s, or older. This audience would appreciate the continuation of Veronica’s story and the satirical exploration of modern societal issues.
Young Adults/Teens
Those who are interested in edgy, boundary-pushing content, as well as an exploration of suicide, mental health, and societal expectations. While this group may not have seen the original Heathers, they might be drawn to the film’s dark humour and the portrayal of how today's youth navigate mental health and societal pressures.
